Kamala Harris is an American politician and attorney currently serving as the Vice President of the United States, a position she has held since January 20, 2021. Born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California, Harris is the daughter of immigrants: her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, was a researcher from India, and her father, Donald Harris, was an economics professor from Jamaica. Her upbringing in a diverse and academically oriented family played a role in shaping her career.
Harris pursued higher education at Howard University, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree, and later obtained her Juris Doctor from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, focusing on cases related to gangs, domestic violence, and child exploitation.
In 2003, Harris was elected District Attorney of San Francisco, becoming the first woman and the first African American to hold the position. During her time in this role, she worked on various criminal justice initiatives and reforms aimed at reducing recidivism and improving the legal system.
In 2010, she was elected Attorney General of California, making history as the first woman and the first African American to serve in this role as well. Her tenure included efforts to address issues like consumer protection, environmental matters, and criminal justice. She was involved in several notable legal cases and worked on initiatives to tackle problems such as mortgage fraud and accountability for for-profit educational institutions.
Harris was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016. As a Senator, she focused on a variety of policy areas, including healthcare, immigration, and criminal justice reform. Her tenure in the Senate was marked by her active participation in hearings and legislative discussions.
In 2020, Kamala Harris was selected as the Democratic nominee for Vice President, running alongside Joe Biden. Their ticket won the presidential election, and Harris was inaugurated as Vice President on January 20, 2021. In this role, she has been involved in addressing significant issues such as voting rights, immigration policy, and the COVID-19 pandemic.
