The Plant-Meat/Health-Junk Test was created by IDRlabs.
The Plant-Meat/Health-Junk Test is a playful yet insightful way to categorize your food preferences along two key axes: Plant-Based vs. Meat-Based and Healthy vs. Junk. By evaluating your favorite foods based on these criteria, this test helps you understand your dietary habits, highlighting whether you’re more inclined toward nutritious or indulgent options and whether you rely more on plants or animal products for your meals. The goal is to offer a fun way to reflect on your eating habits, but it also encourages thinking about the balance (or imbalance) in your diet.
The Axes of the Test
The first axis of the test is Plant-Based vs. Meat-Based. This axis helps categorize whether your food choices come primarily from plant sources, such as vegetables, legumes, fruits, grains, and nuts, or if they lean more toward animal products, such as beef, chicken, pork, and seafood.
Plant-Based options are often linked to herbivore or vegetarian diets, rich in fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants, and typically lower in cholesterol and saturated fat. People who favor plant-based foods may find themselves on this side of the axis.
Meat-Based foods are animal-derived and tend to be protein-dense, which is often a significant factor in many omnivorous or carnivorous diets. Those who enjoy steaks, chicken wings, or seafood will be positioned on this side.
The second axis is Healthy vs. Junk, which measures the nutritional value of your food choices. Are you opting for foods that are nutrient-rich and wholesome, or do you gravitate toward high-calorie, processed snacks?
Healthy foods include nutrient-dense, minimally processed options that provide essential vitamins, minerals, and beneficial compounds. Examples range from leafy greens and whole grains to lean meats and fish.
Junk foods are typically high in calories, fats, sugars, or sodium, offering little nutritional value but lots of instant gratification. These include fried items, sugary snacks, and heavily processed foods that satisfy cravings but aren't great for long-term health.
The Quadrants of the Plant-Meat/Health-Junk Matrix
The test divides food choices into four quadrants using these two axes:
Healthy Carnivore (Meat-Based, Healthy)
This quadrant is for those who prioritize lean meat and nutrient-dense animal products. Think grilled chicken breast, salmon, or bison burgers without the buns. People who fall into this category focus on meat, but their selections tend to be low in unhealthy fats and processed ingredients.
Junk Carnivore (Meat-Based, Junk)
This category is for meat lovers who enjoy indulgent, less healthy options like bacon cheeseburgers, fried chicken, or BBQ ribs. If you love your meat but aren't as concerned with its nutritional value, you'll likely end up here.
Healthy Herbivore (Plant-Based, Healthy)
This quadrant belongs to those who eat plant-based, nutrient-rich foods such as quinoa salads, avocado toast, or lentil soup. If your focus is on fresh fruits, vegetables, and plant proteins, this category is for you.
Junk Herbivore (Plant-Based, Junk)
Not all plant-based foods are healthy! If you enjoy herbivore brownies, herbivore mac and cheese, or potato chips, you'll find yourself in this quadrant. It's possible to avoid animal products and still have a diet full of processed treats.
What the Test Reveals
The Plant-Meat/Health-Junk Test is a fun way to reflect on your eating habits, but it also hints at deeper insights into your overall diet. If you find yourself in the healthy quadrants, it suggests that you’re making conscious choices about your nutrition. On the other hand, if you lean toward the junk side, it might be a playful reminder to consider adding more wholesome foods to your meals.
Whether you're a Healthy Carnivore, a Junk Herbivore, or somewhere in between, this test can spark interesting conversations about food choices. It's not just about what you eat but how your diet reflects your lifestyle and preferences.
