Joseph Goebbels (1897-1945) was the Reich Minister of Propaganda in Nazi Germany from 1933 until his death. He became a member of the Nazi Party in 1924. Goebbels was appointed as Propaganda Minister six weeks after Hitler came to power. The burning of 'decadent' books was one of Goebbels's first deeds as minister. During his reign as minister, he commissioned antisemitic films to be made and distributed and had a direct hand in Kristallnacht. His propaganda reinforced negative stereotypes of Jews and warned Germans not to mix or associate with Jews or they would face harsh retribution.
Goebbels was one of Hitler's closest associates and was known for his deep and virulent antisemitism which caused him to support the execution of Jews as the Final Solution. In 1945, on the day following Hitler's suicide, Goebbels and his wife killed their six children and then committed suicide.
